We are delighted to be working with schools across the local region of Dundee, Angus and Perth and Kinross, who are part of a network of over 550 clubs across Scotland. YESCs can be run in Primary or Secondary schools, with many running during lunch or after school, and others running as whole class projects. SCDI provides a number of free resources on different topics which clubs can use, or they may wish to run their own topic. There are many resources available to download from the YESC website(http://www.yecscotland.co.uk/index.html), and others which come with a free kit (similar to our loan boxes) which clubs can apply for at the beginning of the school year. As an alternative to a resource kit, clubs may apply for a grant of £100 to purchase their own resources. Resources include Science on the Menu (food and drink investigations), Heather’s Hut (renewable energy), Lighting up the Curriculum for Excellence (circuit building) and Hydrocarbons in action (oil and gas) and much more. Our coordination role is to support existing clubs by providing resources and advice, and encourage the development of more clubs in both primary and secondary sectors. We will also be hosting some events, including the upcoming Science on the Menu teacher CPD, as part of Dundee Science Festival, and a free STEM Enrichment day that is being provided to two of our local clubs by one of SCDI’s other partners – the Smallpiece Trust. Through our contract with SCDI, we are embedding this initiative into the work of Dundee Science Centre by providing strong links with each of the following: •the STEMNET contract, including STEM Advisory Service and STEM Ambassador Scheme •Continuing Professional Development Courses and Events delivered through the Science Learning Institute (including Teacher CPD, Science Communication Courses and meet-the-scientist events) •DSC’s Curriculum for Excellence-linked school workshops, loan boxes and web-based material •DSC’s Teacher Forum •Dundee Science Festival If you would like to find out more, please contact Rebecca MacLennan, Regional Co-ordinator, by e-mailing; rebecca.maclennan@scdi.org.uk or by calling; 01382 868609.
